“At NatWest, Scale and Complexity Collide”

Fantastic talk from Joel King of NatWest and Abby Bangser of Syntasso, discussing the challenges involved with large systems, fighting against unsustainable growth, and reaching a balance between centralised vs. decentralised ops.

Abby is leading open source research into defining platforms and processes that are focused on outcomes, while Joel is putting this into practice at NatWest through their Platform as a Product.

This really highlighted the importance of supporting engineering with core platform capabilities, providing a balance between managed devops, freedom, and flexibility. As an engineer working in large organisations myself, this is something that addresses many pain points we feel on the ground day-to-day. I look forward to the continued research and hope it helps shape better platforms across the industry.
